Your Complete Positano Photoshoot Guide (2026)

Planning a Positano photoshoot? The best window runs from late April through early June and again in October, when the Tyrrhenian dry season delivers razor-sharp visibility down to Praiano and the day-tripper ferries from Naples and Salerno are at their thinnest. Sunrise sessions at Spiaggia Grande start at 5:55 AM between May and September, with the wooden fishing skiffs still drawn up on the pebbles and the yellow majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta catching the first warm light. Sessions through Localgrapher start at $280 for 30 minutes and 20 edited photos, with the most popular Silver package at $390 covering 60 minutes and 35 photos. Galleries arrive within four business days. This Positano photoshoot guide was written with input from Roberta, Mimmo, Giuseppe & Steven, Ciro, Roberto, and Pasquale, the local Positano photographers who shoot the vertical village weekly.

Best Time of Year for a Positano Photoshoot

Positano sits on the southern edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula at roughly 40.6 degrees north, which means the seasons matter more than they do in tropical destinations. The peak shoulder windows of late spring and mid-autumn deliver completely different conditions to the height of August, when the SS163 cliffside road clogs from Sant’Agnello south and Spiaggia Grande disappears under three layers of beach umbrellas by 10 AM. Here is how the calendar breaks down for photography.

Couples photoshoot by Ciro, Localgrapher in Positano

The May to June window is when our Positano photographers are busiest, and for good reason. The Mediterranean haze that softens the village skyline in late July has not yet built up, the bougainvillea draped along the staircases of the Mulini quarter is at its color peak, and water temperatures have warmed enough that swimming and sea-foam shots at Fornillo Beach become viable. October delivers a near-identical look with the bonus of thinner cruise traffic from Naples; the Costa and MSC ships taper sharply after the first week of October, and Spiaggia Grande regains the calm it loses entirely from late June through the first week of September.

One local note: the Festa dell’Assunta on August 15, which celebrates the Madonna who supposedly washed ashore at Spiaggia Grande in the medieval era, transforms the central beach with a procession, a fireworks display over the Tyrrhenian, and an entire night of activity around the painted dome of Santa Maria Assunta. If your visit overlaps with the feast, plan a session around it rather than fighting through it. For a location-by-location breakdown of where the light lands best at each time of year, our Positano photo spots guide covers the staircase grid in detail.

Best Time of Day: Golden Hour and the Crowds You Are Racing

Positano sits behind a steep eastern ridge that runs up to Montepertuso and Nocelle, which means the village does not see direct sun until well after astronomical sunrise. In May, this works out to roughly 5:55 AM at the shoreline of Spiaggia Grande, while the Path of the Gods on the ridge above catches first light closer to 6:30 AM. The day-tripper ferries from Sorrento, Amalfi, and Salerno start unloading from 9:00 AM onward, which is the real countdown clock for almost every signature angle in the village.

Tip #1

Sunrise: The 90-Minute Window You Get Once

Be at Spiaggia Grande no later than 5:55 AM from May through early September. The wooden fishing gozzi are still drawn up on the pebbles, the lifeguard towers have not been put up, and the strongest angle is from the eastern end of the beach near the Buca di Bacco, looking back at the cascade with the dome catching the first amber light from the right. The same window for the Via Positanesi d’America walkway is 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM, when the cliff-hugging path is completely empty, and the whole vertical village glows peach behind you. By 8:30 AM, the ferries from Sorrento begin unloading, and the staircase grid fills.

Tip #2

Harsh Light Hours to Avoid

From 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM in June, July, and August, the southern Italian sun sits nearly overhead and erases the architectural depth of the staircase grid entirely. The pastel cascade of houses flattens to a single washed-out tone, and any subject standing on the steps reads as a silhouette against a bright wall. Our photographers do not book outdoor portrait sessions in these hours during high summer. If you only have midday available, ask about a deep-shade approach at the lemon groves above Fornillo or the colonnade of Le Sirenuse.

Tip #3

Evening Golden Hour

Sunset golden hour runs roughly 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM in mid-June and 5:45 PM to 6:45 PM in late October. The painted skiffs return to the pebbles around dusk, the village lights begin glowing from the dome upward, and the cliffside terrace of Le Sirenuse catches a particular shade of rose that does not appear at any other hour. The strongest evening position is the terraced cafe area above the Mulini staircase, looking west across the cascade as the sun drops behind the headland of Punta Campanella.

Tip #4

Blue Hour

The 25-minute window after sunset, roughly 9:00 PM to 9:25 PM in June and 6:55 PM to 7:20 PM in October, is when the village lights warm against a deep blue sky, and the dome of Santa Maria Assunta is up-lit from below. The strongest blue-hour position is the Via Positanesi d’America walkway facing southwest, with the whole vertical village glowing against the sea. Our photographers position themselves at 8:30 PM to scout because the light shifts within two minutes once it starts moving.

“The single biggest mistake I see in Positano is people booking a midday session because they want to be on the beach when it is warm. The light is fighting them the entire time. I would rather shoot you at 6 AM in May with the whole village to ourselves than at noon in July with the umbrellas blocking every angle.”

What to Wear in Positano

Positano’s signature palette is the pastel cascade of houses (peach, terracotta, soft yellow, blush pink, dusty cream), the deep blue of the Tyrrhenian, and the green-yellow majolica tiles of Santa Maria Assunta. The classic mistake is wearing one of those exact colors and disappearing into the wall behind you. The strongest outfits sit in tonal contrast to the village without competing with it.

Tip #1

Couples

For couples, the most flattering palette in Positano is creamy white, soft sage, dusty olive, and warm taupe. These tones complement the pastel cascade and the painted skiffs on Spiaggia Grande without fighting the architecture. A flowy midi or maxi dress in cream linen with a soft shawl for the sea breeze, paired with a stone-colored linen shirt and beige trousers for him, photographs beautifully at both Spiaggia Grande and the Via Positanesi d’America walkway. For evening sessions on the Le Sirenuse terrace, slightly more polished pieces (a silk slip dress in champagne or dusty rose, a navy linen blazer) read well against the warm interior lighting.

  • Avoid: bright coral, hot pink, or saffron yellow, which sit too close to the wall colors of the cascade and erase the figure-ground separation. Matching head-to-toe outfits in the same hue reads as a costume rather than coordination.

Tip #2

Families

Positano is a vertical village with hundreds of staircase steps between most points of interest, and a family session will involve walking. Coordinated, non-matching outfits in a three-color palette work best. A combination that photographs consistently well: creamy white as a base, accented with dusty blue and warm camel. On Spiaggia Grande, this lifts cleanly against the painted skiffs and the dome, and on the staircase grid it stands out without clashing with the pastel walls.

  • Practical note: bring proper closed-toe shoes for any session that includes the staircase climb up the Mulini or the cliffside Path of the Gods. Espadrilles slip on the worn stone, and a child slipping at 7 AM ends the shoot entirely. Bring a light layer for kids during sunrise beach sessions; the morning breeze off the Tyrrhenian is colder than expected even in July.

Tip #3

Solo Travelers

Positano rewards bold editorial choices for solo shoots. The vertical village makes a single figure feel small in the frame in a way that flatters dramatic styling. A long flowing dress in cream, dusty blue, or olive green photographs strongly against the pastel cascade, particularly from the Via Positanesi d’America walkway and the Mulini staircase. For Spiaggia Grande sunrise, flowing linen trousers, a simple top, and bare feet on the pebbles is the formula that does not fail. A photoshoot in Positano works best when the styling lets the village do half the visual work for you.

  • What not to wear anywhere in Positano: dense small-pattern prints (micro-florals, tiny stripes) compete with the textured majolica of the dome and the irregular stone of the staircase grid. Logos and resort branding read as snapshots rather than editorial. Heels of any kind are a liability on the worn marble of the village steps.

Types of Positano Photoshoots

Positano supports a wider range of session styles than its compact size suggests. The combination of the pastel cascade, the beach with painted skiffs, the cliff-hugging walkway, and the ridge-top Path of the Gods means a couple’s session, a family week, a secret proposal, and a solo editorial can each find a distinct visual home within the same village.

Type #1

Couples and Honeymoon

Couples sessions are the most booked category in Positano, and the village rewards them generously. The Spiaggia Grande sunrise, plus a wander up the Mulini staircase to a private terrace, covers two completely different aesthetics inside the Silver package. Honeymoons typically benefit from splitting the time across two sessions on consecutive days: one sunrise on the beach, one evening on the Le Sirenuse terrace or the Via Positanesi d’America walkway. The contrast between the morning pebble shore and the evening cliff terrace tells a richer story than either location alone.

Type #2

(Secret) Proposal

Proposal photoshoots in Positano work exceptionally well at the Le Sirenuse terrace at sunset and at the cliffside viewpoints along the upper section of Via Positanesi d’America. Both locations give the photographer natural cover (a column at Le Sirenuse, the bend in the cliff path at Via Positanesi), close enough to capture the moment without being seen. Our photographers have specific scouting positions at both spots, including a rain-backup plan that uses the colonnade of Santa Maria Assunta. For the full step-by-step breakdown of locations, hiding angles, signals, and rain plans, see our Positano secret proposal guide.

Type #3

Family

Family sessions thrive on the quieter Fornillo Beach side of the village rather than the central Spiaggia Grande. Fornillo is reachable by a short cliffside walk from the main beach; it never fills the way Spiaggia Grande does even in August, and the shaded southern end gives kids a place to play between setups. For multigenerational groups, we usually recommend a starting point at Fornillo with an option to climb up to one of the lemon-grove terraces above the Mulini staircase for a wider sweep of the village.

Type #4

Solo Editorial and Travel Diary

Solo sessions have grown sharply in Positano, particularly for clients who want either a polished travel diary or a single editorial portrait for personal branding. The cascade is so visually loaded that even a 30-minute Bronze session at the right hour produces a usable signature image. The Path of the Gods above Nocelle, reachable by SITA bus to Bomerano or by a steep climb from the village, is the strongest solo location for editorial work, with the cliffside vista down to Praiano and the Li Galli islands unmatched on the entire Amalfi Coast.

“Positano is unforgiving to anyone who shows up without a plan. The light, the stairs, the ferry crowds, they all happen on their own schedule, and you cannot negotiate with any of them. The clients who come away thrilled are the ones who let us pick the hour and the location, then just show up and walk where we point.”

How to Prepare for Your Session in Positano

A well-prepared session in Positano runs differently from one where logistics get sorted on the day. The vertical village rewards practical planning more than almost any other Localgrapher destination on the Amalfi Coast.

Tip #1

Before Your Shoot

  • Confirm the exact meeting point 48 hours in advance. Your Positano photographer will share a specific pin, not just “Spiaggia Grande,” but the eastern end of the beach near the Buca di Bacco, or the cafe at the top of the Mulini staircase. Positano’s staircase grid does not have proper street numbers, and Google Maps positioning is unreliable inside the village.
  • Check the SITA bus or ferry schedule if you are coming from Sorrento, Amalfi, or Salerno. The SS163 cliffside road from Sorrento backs up sharply from June onward, and a 10 AM session start is often missed entirely by clients who rely on the bus from Sant’Agnello. The ferries (Travelmar from Salerno, NLG from Capri and Sorrento) are typically more reliable than the road from May through September.
  • Pack closed-toe walking shoes. The Mulini staircase, the climb to the Le Sirenuse terrace, and the Path of the Gods all involve worn stone steps that are slick in dew. Heels are a liability, and so are smooth-soled sandals.
  • Communicate your priorities before arriving. If you have one specific shot in mind, the dome of Santa Maria Assunta from the western headland, a silhouette against sunrise on Spiaggia Grande, or the painted skiffs in a particular frame, share it in advance so your photographer can preposition.

Tip #2

On Shoot Day

  • Arrive 10 minutes early. Parking in Positano during peak season is genuinely difficult: the central garage at the top of the village (around $8 = €7) per hour) usually has a queue by 9 AM. If you are driving, plan to arrive before 7 AM or take the bus.
  • Bring water. Sessions on the staircase grid and the Path of the Gods involve more vertical climb than most visitors expect, and the Italian summer sun does not show mercy.
  • For sunrise sessions, plan your evening accordingly. A 5:30 AM start means lights out by 10 PM the night before. Positano’s nightlife centers on Music on the Rocks and the bars around Piazza dei Mulini, both of which run late, so a late dinner plus the climb back up the staircase to your hotel will eat into your sleep window.
  • For sessions that end at the Le Sirenuse terrace or another upper-village location, allow time for the staircase descent to your accommodation. The Mulini staircase from Le Sirenuse down to Spiaggia Grande is roughly 12 minutes of steady steps.

Positano Photoshoot FAQ

What is the best time of year for a Positano photoshoot?

Late April through early June and the whole of October are the strongest windows. The Tyrrhenian dry season delivers razor-sharp visibility down the coast, the village is open and operating, and the day-tripper ferries from Sorrento, Amalfi, and Salerno have not yet hit peak volume. May and June carry the bonus of bougainvillea in full color along the staircases of the Mulini quarter, while October brings warmer evening golden hour light and cruise ship traffic that thins sharply from the second week. Avoid August unless you can commit to sunrise sessions only, because the beach umbrellas, the SS163 traffic, and the harsh overhead sun erase almost every signature angle from 10 AM to 4 PM.

How early should I book a Positano photographer?

For the May to June peak window, book at least three to four weeks in advance, particularly if you want a specific photographer (Roberta and Ciro are usually the first to fill). October is similarly busy thanks to the second peak. Shoulder months (March, April, early November) typically have availability within one to two weeks. Last-minute bookings are possible most of the year, but during the Festa dell’Assunta around August 15 and the weeks bracketing major Italian public holidays, the village fills with domestic visitors and availability tightens.

How many locations does a Positano couple’s photoshoot session cover?

The Silver package (60 minutes, 35 photos) typically covers two locations on the same staircase grid, for example, Spiaggia Grande and the Via Positanesi d’America walkway, since both are reachable within a 10-minute walk. The Gold package (100 minutes, 60 photos) opens the option to add a climb to the Le Sirenuse terrace or the lemon-grove area above Fornillo. The Platinum package (120 minutes, 75 photos) is the most flexible and is the one we usually recommend for honeymoon and engagement clients who want the cascade, plus an evening cliff terrace, plus a sunrise pebble shore in a single trip. Note that ferry tickets, if you want to add Praiano or Amalfi (around $12 = €11) one way to Amalfi, and the entry to the Mulini path are not included in the photoshoot package itself.

What is included in a Positano family photoshoot session package?

Every Localgrapher package booked through our local Positano vacation photographer team includes:

  • A private session with a handpicked local Positano photographer
  • Custom location recommendations based on group size, age range, and shoot goals
  • Posing and direction guidance throughout the session
  • Professional editing, color correction, and retouching on every delivered image
  • Online gallery delivery within four business days via a password-protected link
  • Two-year backup storage of your full gallery so you can re-download at any time

Your photographer will suggest family-friendly spots, Fornillo Beach for younger children, and the lemon-grove terraces for groups that want a less crowded setting. Entry fees, transport, refreshments, and any private boat charters are not included. For families of five or more, the Platinum package gives the most flexibility, particularly if you want to split the session across two locations.

Are there any Positano spots that require special permits or entry fees?

Most signature Positano photo spots are free to access, including Spiaggia Grande, Via Positanesi d’America, and the lower Mulini staircase. The two practical exceptions are the Path of the Gods, which is free to walk but requires either the SITA bus to Bomerano (around $3 = €3) or a steep village climb, and the Le Sirenuse hotel terrace, which is a private venue with consumption-based access; your photographer can advise on the best alternative public viewpoint if you do not want to book a drink. Beach umbrella rental at the central section of Spiaggia Grande runs about $30 (around €27) for a half-day pair if you want to factor that into a midday session, though we strongly recommend sunrise instead.

On the Edge of Booking a Professional Photoshoot Through Localgrapher?
Let Our Happy Clients' Reviews Speak for Themselves

A Positano photoshoot rewards preparation more than almost any other Amalfi Coast destination. Know your golden-hour times, pick the locations that match what you want to actually remember about the village, dress in tonal contrast to the pastel cascade rather than matching it, wear shoes you can climb a staircase in, and communicate with your photographer before you arrive. The village does the heavy lifting once you show up: the light here is genuinely extraordinary, the painted skiffs at Spiaggia Grande and the cliff-hugging walk along Via Positanesi d’America are visual gifts you cannot manufacture anywhere else, and our local Positano photographers know every staircase, every lemon grove, and every shoulder window where the light lands cleanly. Whether it is a sunrise on the pebbles, a honeymoon on the Le Sirenuse terrace, a family week at Fornillo, or a secret proposal staged at the dome of Santa Maria Assunta, the right Positano photoshoot guide and the right local at your side make this the strongest session you can book on the Amalfi Coast. Our Positano photographers are ready when you are.
