Plan to Experience and Photograph the Best of Genoa, Italy

Rising vertically from the shores of the Mediterranean up the slopes of the Apennine Mountains, Genoa is truly a gem on the coast of Italy. Distance in the city can be deceiving; what looks like a short walk could actually be a steep climb directly uphill. This unique geography adds character to the city and gives it some of the most stunning coastal views in the country. Since the 10th century, Genoa has risen to become Italy’s leading port, and today numerous ships travel in and out of the marina bound for destinations all over the world.

The rich diversity of the city coupled with the amazing historic sites make it a popular tourist destination and a great place for a photography shoot. With so many interesting places to visit, planning a trip to Genoa can feel a bit overwhelming. Our local photographers in Genoa are familiar with the city and can help you pick the best locations to take photos that capture the charm and elegance of Italy. Here are some places for you to consider when you visit this unique location on the Italian coast.

Cathedral of San Lorenzo

This central cathedral of Genoa has an eclectic combination of architectural styles. When originally being constructed in the 1100s, it was designed using Romanesque features. In the subsequent years, it was remodeled and added to during the Gothic and Renaissance times, creating a truly unique landmark. It’s a great place to capture photographs of the city that combine different important time periods and cultural characteristics. Inside you can view other interesting historic artifacts and enjoy the beautiful artwork and sculptures that decorate the building. Make sure you visit the Cappella San Giovanni Battista, which is the oldest example of Renaissance architecture in the city of Genoa.

Via Garibaldi Palaces

The richest families of Genoa used to inhabit the grand palaces on the Via Garibaldi, though the street itself is more of a quiet alley than a main thoroughfare. Walking down the street, you can view the amazing frescoes, elaborate façades, and elegant courtyards that make the area so beautiful. These palaces have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and make one of the best spots for a photo shoot in Genoa. Our professional photographers will help you capture meaningful pictures so you will always have images to remember when you were able to witness this one-of-a-kind location. Tours of some of the palaces, including the Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Turi, and the Palazzo Bianco, are available, and inside you will be greeted with even more collections of stunning artwork and architecture.

Piazza de Ferrari

The heart of Genoa, this large public square is impossible to miss when you visit the city. The space is surrounded by majestic, historic buildings, and it is from here that most of the main streets of the city begin. There’s lots of cultural activities to find in the Piazza, and our photographers can help you with suggestions about the best places to visit on your trip and good locations for pictures. Make sure you get your photograph in front of the iconic circular fountain ring found at the center of the square.

If you’re interested in art, the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, an art museum with extensive displays of Italian sculptures, is located here. You’ll also find the Teatro Carlo Felice, which was constructed in 1828, and has remained one of Italy’s best opera houses. Even if you’re not interested in attending an event, the opera house is great iconic location to take pictures that capture the amazing architecture of Genoa.

Genoa Harbor

The historic section of Genoa’s harbor remains, but as the city expanded, so did the ports and marinas, until it reached the size it is today, spanning over 22 kilometers. You can walk along the harbor area, and maybe get pictures next to some of the large seafaring boats that dock here. Especially during the summer months, you can find sail boats or fishing boats for day excursions on the water. It is also the location of several more recent tourist attractions, such as the Marine Museum and the Aquarium. The aquarium is the largest in Italy and holds species of marine animals from all over the world. One of the top attractions and a great spot for photographs is the beautiful biosphere, a domed glass building that contains a haven of tropical trees and flowers.

A popular tourist destination, you can have a special experience all your own when you visit Genoa, Italy. Picture perfect and stunningly beautiful, this is a city you’ll always remember.
