The Best Time of the Year to Visit Barcelona

Many would agree that the best time to visit Barcelona is during the end of Spring, early Summer and beginning of Autumn. However, if you are living in a cold region with harsh winters, then certainly Barcelona in January and February may come as a relief.

If you’re a beach lover on the other hand, and love to have your photograph taken while relaxing under the sun with a beach tan in your favorite Summer attire then you may want to skip out on the winter months, since the sea is relatively cold and so is the air. Let’s have a look at each season’s photo opportunities that can be captured by a Barcelona photographer.

Tip #2

Visiting Barcelona in Spring

In Spring you usually get the best of both worlds, warm sunny days, very few lines and thinner crowds in the famous food markets like Boqueria Market located just off the Ramblas. Spring season may be the best season to go Tapas bar hopping, where you can move from restaurant to restaurant trying their local wine and delicious tapas in the Gracia neighborhood or the Gothic quarter if you want a more antiquated photo spot while you’re enjoying your food and wine. The locals are extremely friendly and you may find yourself quickly feeling at home here.

If you’re in Barcelona for Sant Jordi’s Day, on April 23, then it’s the most romantic opportunity to enchant your partner with books and flowers, like the rest of the locals. Don’t miss the opportunity to have this romantic moment documented by your private Barcelona photographer so you two never forget the highlights of your trip.

The week leading up to Easter is called Semana Santa, or ‘Holy Week’ where you can take pleasure in the many parades, especially from the Sant Medir Festival where sweets and candies are thrown throughout the parade. If you are traveling with your family, this is the opportunity to hire a family photographer and photograph your children during the highlight of their trip!

Also, if the weather is right, treat yourself to an exquisite dinner by the sea, sip local wine while listening to the calm waves rolling in, and make sure to dress your best for your photo session of the year. Maybe if you’re lucky you will even catch a sweet Spring tan to brighten up your portrait! Either way, your personal photographer in Barcelona will try to do their best to capture your most complimenting angles.

Tip #3

Visiting Barcelona in Summer

Early Summer may be the best time to visit Barcelona if you want to avoid the long lines and heavy-set crowds. Late summer can also get exceptionally hot and humid, which is slightly less pleasant. The month of June is generally more relaxed than July, and certainly more calm than August. For most of the major European cities, August is the busiest time of a year to travel, where all the hotels are quickly booked up and the beaches and tourist destinations become heavily saturated with tourists.

Many couples decide to get married under Barcelona summer romance since the temperature is fantastic, the days are long, the food is exquisite and the wedding locations are abundant. Photographing your wedding in one of Barcelona’s many villas, magnificent churches like the Barcelona Cathedral, and Sant Pau del Camp, which is Barcelona’s oldest church, and of course, Mediterranian beach wedding are all magical options for your perfect day. Many couples arrange to have a photoshoot on the beach before, or after their wedding, and then have the wedding ceremony photographed with their close friends and family.

Additionally, for those who choose to hire a photographer to record engagements, anniversaries, and warm family photoshoots, Barcelona experiences long daylight hours with colorful sunset backgrounds.

Tip #4

Visiting Barcelona in Autumn

Many people prefer to travel to Barcelona in early autumn since the crowds are much thinner, which means the lines or shorter in the museums, tourist sites, and incredible shopping strips. Diada Nacional de Catalunya, or Catalonia Day, is a festival celebrated on September 11th, where you can see large groups of people rallying with the Catalan flags of four red stripes on a yellow background. There are many concerts held and a public-serving of the famous paella dish smells everywhere. This day is full of activities and buzzing with life, the streets become a perfect photographic scene to capture during your trip.

In autumn the weather is pleasant, making it perfect for both indoor and outdoor activities. This is your opportunity to visit Museu Picasso, Fundacio Joan Miro Museum and Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, which is a Neo-Baroque palace whose exterior will be more than a pleasant surprise. A photoshoot right in front of the waterfall cascading down the front steps of this museum is an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed by you and your personal Barcelona photographer.

Then, of course, there is the Spanish cuisine that is beyond impressive. In Autumn the nights are still warm enough to enjoy a romantic dinner on a terrace of a restaurant run by world-renowned chefs whose dishes are truly inspiring and satisfying. Between the rich and flavorful local produce, the fresh seafood and the robust Spanish wine it’s nearly impossible to experience a mediocre night. Some of the best photographs from your trip may come to life during one of your romantic dinners, say, in the charming Gothic Quarter.

Tip #5

Visiting Barcelona in Winter

While most people vote for a Barcelona summer, there are also many people out there advocating Barcelona’s winter season as the best time to visit the city. From late autumn through January you and your family can experience Catalan Christmas and have this holiday season photographed in an exciting new tradition and environment.

Then you can visit the incredible la Sagrada Família designed by famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. In the wintertime, the sun is still shining making this UNESCO World Heritage Site a perfect photography scene. However, better make sure your photographer can shoot indoor as well as outdoor photos since la Sagrada Família is stunning from the inside out. This Roman Catholic church and the Park Güell were both designed by Gaudi, but if you miss your photo opportunity in la Sagrada Família, you absolutely cannot do the same with Park Güell.

In Park Güell you will have the privilege of an incredible view over the entire city and this is a photography wonderland. Here, it’s nearly impossible not to capture an amazing photograph of you and your loved one, or you with your family. You can have your family portrait here with the beautiful tiles adorning your photograph, or while you’re walking through an archway of trees that are still green in winter!
